Is this Art? Fountain by Marcel Duchamp
Titled "Fountain" and signed "R. Mutt 1917" this standard urinal of its time bought at a plumbing store, tilted 90 degrees from it's intended functional use, was submitted by Marcel Duchamp to the exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists in 1917 and rejected by the committee.
There has been much debate about whether this is or is not art and relates to Dadaism (anti-art cultural movement of the early 20th century avante-garde).
What do you think? Is the Fountain art? What does it symbolize?
