As Madonna famously said, “We are living in a material world.” This is true, but how we relate to the material world, with nature, and with money is a highly complex thing.
I spoke more of nature yesterday and will be talking more about money matters today.
Yesterday I read that the top 85 richest billionaires have as much money as the poorest 3.5 billion people on earth combined. That is staggering. As we all know, money is power. When you’ve got lots of money you can make decisions that have huge impact on people and society. That is a few people, with a lot of power to steer the ship.
How is that possible though? Is it that 85 people are just smarter and know what to do to become rich, while half the planet just doesn’t know how to do it?
Well, it’s much more complicated than that.
Everyone wants money. In this day and age, we absolutely need it to buy the necessities of life, and most of us don’t know how to live off the land and off the grid. We are highly dependent on the financial system for just about everything now.
Finances and economics have countless rules. All those rules and policies governing money can keep a lot of people feeling suppressed. It has been said that the system of money is likened to a form of slavery. We can see this is true especially in foreign countries where child labor, countless hours under horrible conditions are endured so people can put food in their bellies.
So often, we hear people complaining about the rules imposed by the banks and the government, taxes, interest rates, etc., that keep a lot of people struggling to move up in the world. It is seen that those at the top have all the cards and are the ones shuffling the deck. A casino is a great example… if you visit a casino and play by their rules, don’t expect to come out a winner. Almost always, the casino will benefit financially from your visit, while you hand over your money. And, if you do win any significant amount, the casino managers will become highly suspicious and have their cameras hone in on you because they know that the rules of the game are mathematically set up so that the casino profits while you lose your money.
But it’s always easy to blame those at the top. Yes, the problems do definitely have a higher hand at work in setting up the system, but how are we ourselves responsible for contributing to the financial issues we face? We often hear about greed and usually associate it with the rich fat cats, but what about the average citizen? Is the average citizen greedy too?
Let’s look at houses for example. We all need a place to live. It is necessary to have shelter. The necessity of having a home creates a demand in the market, so people will get a loan from the bank to pay for the mortgage. But year after year the prices of homes keep going up and the quality and size of homes for a reasonable price keeps decreasing. Whose fault is it that the prices of homes keep going up so much?
How are we ourselves responsible for the escalating prices? Well, we often see people buying a home, fixing it up only slightly with cheap upgrades, perhaps even just a paint job to make it look fresher aesthetically, then reselling it to the next buyer at a much higher cost. In other words people are expecting that they can contribute little, but get big returns. But what does that really mean? It means people are cheating each other and taking advantage of each other for their own benefit. In other words people are being selfish. The scenario shows that people are making each other have to pay higher prices. In the grand scheme of things, participating in this scenario, only further creates the situation of higher cost housing, puts ourselves and others in more debt, and the banks are the real benefactors in the end. Is that good karma? Is taking from someone else so you can have more for yourself and put others in debt what our society teaches us to do to one another?
Talk about an ego driven, self centered approach to living, and if so many people are doing this to each other on a small scale, such as buying and selling homes, how can we really expect those at the top to behave differently?
We see this happening all the time even with our food, another necessity. Packages get smaller and weighs less while prices go up. What we’re doing over time is reducing quality and increasing costs. This is how people and companies are operating, and obviously it’s not sustainable. We can’t just keep taking the most and giving the least and expecting things to balance out. When the haves have, the have nots must go without.
People are taking advantage of each other all the time for the sake of having more money for themselves, but what that means is when you take more money for yourself, someone else has to go without. It also means that someone in a foreign country is working for pennies, while the profits for production are funneled to the top. This scenario is exactly why we see that 85 of the richest people have as much money as 3.5 billion of the poorest have. People are taking advantage of one another to have more than others, and that’s how many people believe how to work their way up in the world. It is an egoistic approach to living.
You can look at it as a pyramid, with the few at the top with the most, and the many at the bottom with the least.
Is that really what we want in life? Do we really want a world where people take advantage of others so they can have more while others go without?
