Who do you think is inspired? I like Gustave Moreau, Odilon Redon, Wenzel Hablik, and other symbolists. Who are some good ones, or your favorites? Art is something that possesses a particular spiritual quality relatively often.

Oh, I can't remember them all- I think Bosch takes the cake though. I've read vollumes on Bosch, and learned much of midevil symbolism, alchemy and other parallels on the way. "Bosch" by Wilhelm Fraenger is esoterica.

I don't know of any esoteric artists, other than say Da Vinci. I suppose he could be considered as such?

A few months ago I picked up a paintbrush, bought a few canvases and some acrylic paints (wish I had got oil), but haven't done much. I was so inspired after reading a bit of the book The Beginners Guide to Constructing the Universe. It is about sacred geometry, and when I read that I felt a strong draw to bring aspects of this into the world of paint and canvas. However, my attempts became complete disasters and I easily lost interest. Did I give up to easily? Yes, I'm sure I did... one of my great lessons in life I must overcome to evolve I'm sure.

I would like to bring aspects of sacred geometry into abstract art. I have such great abilities to make music in my mind, to visualize amazing art, yet I have great difficulty bringing it from those ethereal realms into the real world. What does come into the real world is often a distortion, and an unpleasant one at that.

I will look up images on the web by these artists you mentioned. Maybe they will inspire me to move ahead and make attempts to create something satisfying.

Ah, Hieronymus Bosch! Yes, he certainly is one of my favorites. As far as modern artists are concerned, I find the works of Alex Grey particularly transporting.

Infinity, Alpha & Omega, Magic Speculative. How I see it.

Thanks guys. Yes, Da Vinci's content was certainly occult in its time. He brought new ideas into circulation; so he was inspired.

I am not shooting for a particular usage of esoteric. In some art the esoteric is coming from the inside out, and in other from the outside in... If you read a good analysis of Bosch, you'll have a rough idea of what I mean, or of Moreau who did pseudo-illustrational paintings of mythology, especially of Ovid.

Artists like Moreau are like gate-keepers: Their images and their beauty make viewers curious of the contents and leave their brand on the psyche, which could originate as far back as whence the artist can channel(the artist doesn't always know the extent of the power of his work in a way that can be explained, or recognized). Artists like Bosch are blatantly communicating with alchemical and esoteric symbolism.

It's worth pursuing. It's like ritual. You come in one way and out another. Like one who does not see the reason of it, you must do it sheerly to contemplate it, because its exteremely intense subjectively, even if it just looks like scribbling to an other. There are phsyical interactive components. To become an adept at it, you must sacrifice something of yourself. I would recommend doing sheerly for experience, so to increase acumen and acuity. It stimulates your higher faculties, like any rigors. There is a mode of expression that comes naturally to you- It's just a matter of heuristics and self-definition. All you need is a reason, or purpose to mak somthing and it is justified. Things forced are some times less authentic. See Zen art- It's calligraphic. Their spiritualist theory of art involves modesty-art is not a showing-off of skillz- and like many cultures discourages figurative portrayal. Drop wattered paint upon a surface just to observe the interplay of chemicls and colors. Unless your finances bind you, do not be stingy with it, if only you are serious.

I am not sure how you identify "inspired" but I will surely look these artists up. I do have one artist I love immensely, just not sure if he would fall under your category of esoterics. I find Salvador Dali's paintings to be sometimes a little over the top, but I did find one when traveling to Fredericton.

It was in the Beaverbrook gallery and I thought it was amazing. The colors, the concept was interesting and I quickly found some relevance to the crucifixion, at least that is what I took from it.

Take a look for yourself below, and let me know if this would qualify as esoteric or inspired.

This painting reminds me of either the Chariot card or the Sun card in the Tarot? Sun / Son relation here possibly?

I like Dali's art, it's considered to be in the surrealist genre.

Is that an atomic blast below the horse? Does it reference to the horsemen of the apocalypse? Then there is the Madonna, the Venus of the waters... I'm sure this painting is gorgeous in full size.

    Thanks for sharing.

I just checked out Hieronymus Bosch as well, love that stuff too. Art is surely a pleasure.

You have to read about them. Dali is rather ostentatious. He was one of the first celebrity artists, and maybe one of the last. I don't know of any in this decade.

If you read about Dali, you would find he forsake the original ideas of surrealism. His approach is an imitation of dreams, which was not worthy to the original surrealists, the first to co-operate as a an organized movement in its day. The original tenets were about channeling things, from the psyche, as they believed, inspired by freud,w ho legitimized mediumism in materialistic terms... Dali is well-known and widely adored, but I find his osterntatious style more for of an external nature... The surrealists were describing mediumism as it is experienced by the artist and they were developing its techniques s a science. Dali decided to portray flashy phantasmagoria. His method involved mortification by sleep-deprivation. The work is quite acessible. It does not use the old symbols- All of the symbols are "natural". I prefer the works of Andre Breton, or of the loopier, more abstract members of the movement who adhered to the original principles, because it is more objective for what its is that it adheres uncompromisingly to its inner nature. I believe that the process would ultimately reveal more and that Dali's style could be described as immitational. However the pieces are of great power. Dali;s work speaks for itself, but it is often classified as "pop/surrealism". Some consider him somewhat like a quirky celeb, like warhol+his superstars, and popular(exoteric) is antipidous to esoteric. Also, there is no arcanum. I mean they re flashy and all, but I associate the mythical paintings with the old mystery schools, the symbols of which were used. Dali has broken from that and even forsookt he original tenets of tapping into the infinite, which was popularized by romantics, symbolists and theosophists.

Mondrian and Kandinsky are theosophical painters. I wonder where these innovators got their inspiration? Mondrian's body of work shows the transition from concrete objects to universal abstractions. Kandinsky does compositions that portray kosmic schema. Paul Klee is unaligned but he is a transcendentalist.
