I was just wondering, for the guys out there, what title you use for yourselves. I know most of the feminine ones are pretty solidified but it seems that male titles are a bit more erratic. Witch, wizard, sorcerer, warlock, shaman, etc etc etc... what do you personally identify yourselves with?

I try not to label myself, but this could also be because I don't ascribe to any singular system that has an established order of titles or hierarchy. I would label myself a neophyte in magick if I had to choose a label, but couldn't be sure when I would progress from such a label as I think on the spectrum of learning and become more adept at our craft we always have a near infinite way to go.

I do have an interest in Golden Dawn, of which I still have to get myself on a path of learning of the order.

Warlock is a term I don't fully understand, as it conjures imagery of war/warrior archetypes and my intentions in magic wouldn't align with such. Wizard brings imagery of very powerful telikinetic forces of which I do not have. Shaman doesn't seem to fit either, but I do have intentions in healing through magickal practices. I do like sorcerer, but seems much too advanced for me now. Witch may work, although many will associate it with the more feminine energy, whereas I prefer something more neutral, something all encompassing without duality overlays.

I don't know if I'll ever be able to give myself a label, or fit myself neatly into one Title, I feel too eclectic in my leanings to comprehend it at this stage. Because I have interest in Qabalah, I'm wondering if Qabalist would be fitting once I have more knowledge and abilities in this area.

Thanks for bringing this up as I'd be interested to hear what others have to say on this subject as well.

I think that most of the 'labels' in question are usually used by others to describe practitioners. Seldom would a true practitioner feel the need to label himself thus.

I've never found a label that feels like it fits, other than perhaps 'student'. Whatever path we tread, we are still enroute, and till we arrive, we are atill learning. So student works for me.

    Though I'm defintely not male

I apologize in advance, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to jump on that one thought of yours :p since the whole 'warlock' thing has fascinated me for some time. I was recently researching the etymology of the word; I'm sure you've all heard the 'oath-breaker' concept, where warlock is taken as an insult. However, as I looked into it more I saw that the origin has actually been disputed by words meaning oath-breaker as well as 'spirit-caller', and that in some ways it is just another word for the male magicworker. I know that many people these days would not be very happy at being called a warlock, and worse, might think the person using the word was inexperienced and ignorant. So that line kind of caught my attention, and I'm curious as to what images it is exactly that you get from it.

    Question

Well, I am male so I'll chime in real quick.

To my mind, 'warlock' stands out as the term used for a male 'witch' back in the days of fear and persecution. So essentially, whatever its etymology, it was pretty much a death sentence for one to have that term applied to them. That would be reason enough for me to avoid that term personally; so as not propagate a term so thoroughly laced with suspicion and vitriol. However, since I don't follow a magickal path, perhaps others who do have a different take on things?

As it is, I do practice a path based on psi. But I try to avoid all labels, and the title 'psychic', and simply use the term 'intuitive' where a title would be helpful. If I was on a magickal path, I would probably still avoid a label alltogether, or just use the term 'mage' if someone really was dying to title me as something. As far as I know 'mage' is simple, to-the-point, unisex, non-dramatic, and doesn't self-aggrandize. I couldn't see myself using a flashy title in that context any more than I would currently use titles like 'psionicist', 'seer', or 'mentalist'. Though again, no disrespect to those who see things differently. That's just my personal predelictions.

So 'mage' would suit me best, hypothetically. Hope my 2 cents was useful.

Being a male practitioner of both high Kabbalahistic magic and Alchemy. I have found the name Thaumaturge trully embodies the male spirit, being a masculen use of a greek word meaning wonder-maker.

some see warlock as oathbreather not a positive connotation,

there are several male (not exclusively) paths, priest/ess, magician (practice of qaballah magicks)(adept/ based on your "grade/level" initiate/master/neophyte)/witch, herald, warrior/knight/hero, satyr, druid/wizard...however you define/label yourself. lightbringer/worker, healer, jedi, philosopher, yogi
