I agree that each side in this debate has an axe to grind. This is why I included the Snopes link. They are an impartial party. There is no ban on leaded candles in Canada yet. Most North American made candles don't contain lead, however ones made elsewhere and sold here most certainly could.
Another good candle alternative is soy wax. As far as wicks, hemp rope can be used. Avoid petroleum or paraben on the labels, these are often in lotions and mislabelled as "fragrance" are hormone distrupters that cause cancer just like reusing plastic water bottles.

Remember when burning candles or incense or anything else, there is still soot and other byproducts of burning that you will be inhaling. So no "burning" product is entirely "safe". However, keeping wicks trimmed to 1/4" will reduce the output of soot while burning.
