Magic Names?

I was wondering what a Magic Name was, and how do you figure out what yours is?

Lots of different traditions involving magical names and lots of different meanings and applications of magical names. What particular "path"/religion/circle/application are you trying to find a magical name for?

Most ceremonial followings will give people magical names that they use during the ceremony. The psychological effect of having a magical name gives someone a sense of power, focus of self, helps them concentrate better and have more confidence. Also, social dynamics of having special magical names is a neat trick that is used in many subcultures/cultures/gangs/etc. It's a little less intoxicating than wearing a mask and robe to hide your identity and normal social role.

Some followings make little cute alphabet/numerical formulas to pick a name.

Many magical names people give themselves to instill a certain vibe or value, I think most of them are derived from older languages that pertain to the magical ceremony they are emulating.

I many times refer to myself in third person to have many different names, and depending on what/who I'm trying to communicate to, I'll refer to myself using different names. It's something intuitively done, and everything in magic only serves application. Why do I want a name? Do I want to identify myself with a cause or a feature of nature to instill in myself and in others a responsibility and an action I must undertake?

If you want to create certain group dynamics to perform ceremonies for whatever purpose, then make names that flatter and make a person proud to be a member of a group. Or you might want to establish order with the names, to give people ranking and status. Status is an important feature of social interaction to be utilized to keep a group together.

I ask myself what is the application of the name, then I go from there. Sometimes someone will summon me by "_____", I don't care what you summon me by, a name serves purpose, purpose has been served by any name if you let it. Nothing is done without consent. When you are ready to know your permanent name then you'll know it, when you are ready to know the true names then you'll know them.

The path that I wish it be is more of a Gnostic one, or old Christian/Jewish. Maybe even a cool Latin or Greek name associated to a more Gnostic purpose or Judeo-Christian.

Okay I am gonna say I do not know too much about "magic names" but I would think if you were or wanted to give one to yourself you would try a lexigram/annagram of your ENTIRE birth name.
I know of a generator to help with this http://www.wordsmith.org/anagram/advanced.html
but the most personal and effective way to do this is to do it by hand. Here is how,

In brief…
Each word/name/phrase is made of certain letters.
i.e.
the word COINCIDENTAL contains these letters: LTNNDCCOIIEA.
Certain NEW (OLD?) words/phrases/names can be created with the use of those, available letters. The new words/phrases that are created with the available letters are, LEXIGRAMS/ANNAGRAMS


However, there are certain (strict) rules with regard to how lexis are “born”.


RULE 1
You can create as many words as you like. The average was 20-30 words per lexigram. You can use the same letter in DIFFERENT words of your lexigram, but not twice in the same word – unless there are two of a same letter available.
I.e. out of LTNNDCCOIIEA
- you may create: I CANNOT NAIL or I CLONED A CAT
- but you may not create I AM AN ALIEN (no M!) or I ADD (only one D may be used per word!)

RULE 2
The word/name/phrase you wish to annagram should not contain all five vowels, A-E-I-O-U. Ideally, it will only contain three of them. Also, the total number of letters should not exceed 15 – this is when you add vowels to the consonants.
It is permissible for the phrase to contain as many “copies” of one letter. I.e. if the original name/phrase/word has less than 15 different and separate letters of the alphabet, it doesn’t make a difference whether it has 3 or 33 Os, or if it has 5 or 15 Bs.


RULE 3
Lexigrams/annagrams (the new words you form) need studying, they need pondering, they need interpreting… please remember to complete your final lexigrams in capital letters

I.e. COINCIDENTAL lexies into NOT AN ACCIDENT.


Lexigramming/annagramming takes practice… it can also take considerable time, most of it for tuning in to your inner-self, waking your Higher Self up and soon you shall witness little word druids by your side opening up amazing new worlds.

Liam, sometimes a "magic name" is given to us to use when we present ourselves in meditation, prayer, or ritual. You might try praying or meditating and ask for a name to be given to you. A magic name can be very significant and can have great meaning to you. You may want to keep it private once it is given.

If you ask, you will be given the answer.

You can choose a magic name for yourself, for any work that you do, but ask and listen, and you will probably find that the right name will appear 'on its own.'

Liam, I know you didn't mean this when you asked the question, but did you know your birth name is a magic name, according to Numerology? It represents the contract that your parents made [unconsciously] with Spirit at the time you were conceived, to produce a child of your vibration. You had already determined the "best" vibration for you in this incarnation, and your name is a product of that. Each time someone says your name, it is like a mantra, creating ripples that echo your vibration out into the Universe. This being the case, perhaps you need to look no further.

Why should I keep it private?
Just wondering.

Unless told otherwise by your higher-self it makes sense to be cautious. In many cultures/sects/traditions people have many names, one for referring to themselves, one for other people to acknowledge you by, one for this, one for that, and in many traditions, they say you have a name that shouldn't be spoken, because if other's were to know your name, they could do whatever they want to do to you.

It's like how in many magic sects, they say if you know the deities/agents secret or true name then you can instruct it to do whatever you want it to do.

Some magic writers say you should keep your rituals secret or else someone will steal them and steal the power that you sealed into the ritual. Not that I have experience with that, just saying that to be on the safe side... I don't know much about magic though

Here's my personal theory on magical names. I'm sure everyone has heard the theory of True Names, from countless fantasy books and referenced in magical theory all over the place; the idea that every living thing has a true name, and by knowing that name one may exert control over it. My take on magical names is that at an initiation, personal or formal, you receive your true name so that you have one to use that is not your true name (the one you were born with, the one you first recognize as your own). That way dirty dealing black magic mothers can't use it against you

I'm sure of course there's loads more to every aspect than that alone, but that's a basic summary of my view. Hope it helps somewhat.
