What is Supposed to Happen in the Meditative State?
I ask this because, I just feel there must be more to it than what I experience, All I get from it is after wards, I sleep well. Wake up in the morning relaxed, happy, and chill. Is there other ways? Is there other experiences?

I have always been told that in meditation you can receive messages so to speak. But I get my messages so to speak in the most erratic of times. When my mind wont shut up! As if it isn't me speaking. I describe these voices as 3 female voices. One who sounds feminine, and is nice. The other is feminine, with a bit of masculine. The other is a feminine voice, but in odd babbling and some sort of an alien language to me. I always thought meditation is what allowed you to receive such messages. So why not?

What can you experience in Meditation???

Thanks, & may Love & Light be With You!

Meditation is about emptiness. It's about letting go of thoughts. It's about feeling yourself being in the moment, being present.

There are a number of different ways of meditating like guided journeys, mantra's, yantra's and such, but the essence of meditation, to me, is really about letting go of the chattering mind and feeling the moment of being alive, feeling who you really are, and feeling the presence of existence as being now.

What you are describing sounds something like channeling, which I don't think is meditation.

If you have expectations of what meditation is supposed to be, that's missing the point. Meditation is about not having expectations.

There are many approaches to meditation, Liam, and each individual experiences it differently. there are the types of meditation where you are physically involved..walking, yoga etc.. or even the meditative state I slip into when painting.

Then there are the types where the physical state is 'side-lined' and one climbs through the planes of being through the mind. Both types have numerous subdivisions.. but what it all boils down to is stilling the incessant chatter of the surface mind that is a constant 'white noise' in the background of our lives, and tuning in to the inner self to allow communication with the higher self, and through the higher self with the forces of the Cosmos.

Celtaur is right in that the voices heard clairaudiently appear to be chanelled rather than the results of meditation.

The meditative state feels different for each of us, but common factors include a feeling of utter peace and freedom from stress, worry or tension, at both the physical, emotional and mental levels, complete relaxation (even when the body is active) and an expansion of perception and consciousness, where you 'realise' and understand things in new, deeper ways, without neccessarily having had the concrete knowledge before.

If you are meditating before going to sleep, this would explain why you wake feeling so good. If however you try meditating in the mornings, it is like having a full english breakfast.. it feeeds the inner man and sets you up for the day

    Here my

There are different types of meditation. Some types are simple, safer, and rather static.
For example, imagine an object against a dark background...
If you choose to focus on the object or the background then this is one type of meditation (mindfulness).
The person is still, comfortable, and silent. The person focuses awareness on the target. The foundation is the focus, the place is the present, the action is effortless relaxation, the enemies are daydreaming and analysis. The target doesn't have to be a visualization, it could be the breath, etc.

Other types are more complicated, not as safe, and rather dynamic.
You do something repetitive that requires some thought while focusing on an object or an idea...
this type of meditation is concentrative.
Examples: Praying the rosary, Tai Chi Chuan, Chi Kung that requires some movement (like "move hands like clouds").
In the instance of the Rosary, a person must perform repetitive prayers that are counted and then change and inserted at key points is a "mystery" which is the object of the meditation. The mystery is recited and it changes from one mystery to the next at each key point.
In the instance of Tai Chi Chuan, particular positions are struck (perfection is strived for in each
position) and the movement from one position to the next is to be graceful, natural, at a constant speed
or changing speed (depending on the style), and in a particular transition path while focusing on
relaxation, intention, internal energy and/or breath (depending on style).

Meditation seems to be a manner in which a person can quiet the mind through an effortless focused awareness of a target (which can be nothingness) in the constant present while doing something or nothing. So with that in mind a person could achieve a meditative state by coloring, playing solitaire, sitting on the back porch sipping tea, going for a walk...or doing something more elaborate that may provide additional benefits.

Note: Though some put contemplative meditation in the "mindfulness" category, I choose to put that puppy it in a category all its own.

In closing let me apologize for rushing through this (I have been doing a lot of that lately) and point out that there is so much more to say on the subject, but this is probably enough to see that the answer to what is supposed to happen during meditation is dependant on many things. One has different experiences and results depending on what type of meditation, what type of person, was it performed correctly, what goals were set (if any), how they felt that day, their progress, their health....endless factors and combinations of those factors creating unique situations even for the same person doing the same type of meditation every day.

I hope all this blah, blah, blah was at least a little helpful.
