Hermit

I am a tarot beginner and I am using the Rider-Waite Deck and just doing a daily Three Fates spread.

The Hermit keeps coming up in my future. The thing is though a few days ago it was am upright hermit but today it was a reversal.

Now, I have read that some people don't put a lot of weight into a reversal but the cards have been spot on lately with my past and present, but the hermit coming up twice for the future in the same week and one being reversed is confusing.

I am in a situation where I am separated from my wife and most like we will have an amicable divorce and remain best of friends. I can see the hermit being applied from that standpoint.

I can see how I would want to be in solitude to gain peace and understanding, and to further my studies in the esoteric. In that light I can see the Hermit as being a good card and a positive future.

I don't get the hermit reversal though, I have read popular interpretations and basically they all say that I will be hard headed and not listen to good counsel and that I need to step back and listen to people and put my ego to the side.

Maybe I am putting to much into having two hermits this week.

Any advice or suggestions. I know that I ramble in my posts sometimes, so just consider me the Joyce of forum postings.


On a side not, those of you who follow my blog, I had all the notes typed up for the entire Chapter 4 and hit a button and they disappeared. I am currently trying to retype them all and hope to finally have Chapter 4 up today.

Lil' ole Hermit... although he may highlight a period of frustration, he is really just saying "Hey! Slow down, spend some quality time getting organised, and just giving yourself time to think things through!"

What is obvious in the Hermit card - is that he isn't actually locked away in his cell, he's very much represented as being on the move... he's searching, and not at all passive. Gathering information and getting things organised in order that the connections that you seek can be made is the keynote.

The impatience heralded by Hermit can be on two fronts: the desire for solitude in a hectic world being the obvious one; but he can point to the frustration felt as others don't seem to be getting it! (They haven't made the connections you have through that period of introspection... )

In short, although he is definitely indicating a period in which a little bit of solitude would be beneficial, he is a very positive card. Long walks, going on a retreat, or simply a period of non socialising are all recommended - as these will allow things to fall into their proper perspective (and order).

The reversal to me is more about not letting your frustration with others out - as you need time to consider all angles before going in with guns blazing "know-it-all" style. The connection building needs to be completed first - otherwise you are just going to alienate those around you (who you obviously care about - otherwise you wouldn't be bothering trying to ''put them right''...) I can see how it may be put across as ''watch your ego'', but it really isn't about ego - more about the need to get everything clear in your own mind first, before trying to communicate your knowledge, feelings or beliefs to others.

The way I see the Hermit in my life, is when I feel introverted and conservative about my actions. I feel in order to anything really great, it requires some self meditation and cultivation of spirit and energy before going about with something. Hermit could also represent waiting or patience, waiting for an opportunity or waiting for the preparation to be put in place so I may go into the action strongly and with force behind me.

So in that sense, the Hermit reversal would be giving up on storing something or cultivating something, or deciding it's not the time to wait for something to come tome and letting time pass by is not suiting my interest? I don't know.

I wouldn't worry about the Hermit presenting first upright and then reversed during the same week..if it was upright first, perhaps your reaction to the idea of the Hermit energy could have caused the reversal later on in the week..don't forget that Tarot spreads [like any reading] are snapshots in time. By observing the energy they outline and probable outcomes based on those energies, we can actually change the outcome depending on whether we think it is desirable or not. The most important aspect of the Hermit in my opinion is his willingness to step back and gain perspective and clarity, by doing his inner work.
