This is a two part post, I thought I would answer and stay on topic of the dark moon...but then create a new post about magical workings for tonight or tommorow's true full moon ritual.

The dark moon is a time of contemplation and turning inwards, it is also associated with the underworld, death, and communication with spirits. Some spirits can be dangerous, as well as words spoken not understood as the veil is thin between worlds. Potentially something nasty can be unleashed, but karma has mostly a self limiting approach to the immediate family.
So Dangerous? not extremely so for the well prepared traveller, but not advised or extremely wise either. It is traditionally a time of rest, but for the more seasoned practitioner:

It is a powerful time of psychic energy and divinations can be done. It is a time of death before rebirth, and we are living in "dark moon" time before the apocalypse/ascension, and entering "dark moon" season of the winter after the harvest of the fall. The lady is entering her crone phase for the winter before she comes back as maiden in the spring, at least in my path.

It is also a time for banishing or binding magic. I practice some grey magic associated with this, and cannot go into what black practitioners do at this time for safety and lack of knowledge.

The goddesses face is hidden, meaning we cannot necessary count on her for protection and guidance at this time as she is in her harsh nature and misunderstood crone aspect one must be familiar with this darker side of self and duality of universe to work effective magic or unintended consequences or nothing can result. However the crone or morrigan is a warrior and can give protection as well for just circumstances.

It is not all love and light at this time like a full moon, so it is definately not for those that follow popular wicca, more so for the serious solitary witch, shaman, necromancer, spirit worker or trad coven who fully understand the karmic and psychological implications and therefore their choice to work at this time is an informed one. One must be steadfast and with no fear in their heart, with perfect love and trust.

All this has brought me to yet another question:

What about a"lunar eclipse". Would this be considered a dark moon, when she is hiding her face or would this be something different. Looking at her as mother(ly), it seems more like a game of peek-a-boo and I wonder if this would be a special time of guidence and/or playfulness.

The lunar eclipse is when the sun and moon and earth are in alignment. It is unfavorable because the opposite energies as poles can cause natural disaster on earth or ill omen. Alignments are usually considered positive however. It is said to be a period of change because the moon can go through a whole months worth of changes in a three hour period. Her face is again considered veiled, but because this is a time of chaos, she may allow you to lift her veil and great secrets can be learned from the goddess at this time. It is an introspective time where if you meditate on what may need to be dealt with, or things kept hidden, it can be a block removed to move on. Also may be a good time to remove curses.
