Part of Cleopatra-era temple raised from the sea

ALEXANDRIA, Egypt (AFP) - A huge granite block, part of a stone pillar from a temple in a sunken Cleopatra-era city off Alexandria, was lifted by crane from the Mediterranean off the Egyptian port on Thursday.

The nine-tonne stone block was part of a temple to Isis, ancient Egypt's goddess of fertility, near the underwater ruins of a palace reputed to have belonged to the famed queen, who ruled in the first century BC.

"This is one of the most important archaeological finds in Alexandria, among the 400 items recovered by the Greek archaeological team that has been engaged in underwater research since 1998," Culture Minister Faruq Hosni said at the scene.
