The 7 Laws of Hermetics.

All of these I had already believed, but I was not aware that they were a set of laws already! Interesting that everything we already know in our souls that is true is nothing new, that the ancients possessed this knowledge for thousands of years and somehow we already know these things without being taught!

Friend Mousie, I think you will find some variations of the Hermetic Laws in many Esoteric traditions, you just have to be able to sift through the excess verbage to find them (Kaballah, Hinduism, Tao, etc)

I think you are right, Jay. Our souls remember the truth, but our minds need reminding.. or opening to what our greater selves know, and the Paths we choose are like an advent calendar, opening doors, one after another, to reveal what we know will be there.

Interesting post, and its great to see an active discussion on Hermetics, my favourite branch of Magick.

In relation to some of the posts concerning what was lost in Alexandria - I wouldn't be too concerned. The burning was probably a good thing seeing as Christianity absorbed and adapted quite enough of the esoteric knowledge without having access to the more arcane secrets. At that time our society wasn't developed enough to understand or appreciate it.

The Hermetic students, as with most real occult students know that knowledge is always around us and can never be lost. We may think we've discovered a new law or method of operation, but in fact we've only noticed something that's been in front of us the whole time. We didn’t create the laws of physics or the laws of magick, they’re collective research into what works, and they were always manifest.

**************: "Take away the mind and their can only be peace.” I do not [necessarily] agree with this. The mind is a tool; more precisely it is a tool for manifestation. The mind perceives the abstract and creates forms based on its understanding. It would be better to say "Develop the mind and remove corruption from our thinking and there will be peace". From all of the different paths I've studied I have seen similarities in the light being sought.

What differs is the opinion on what that light can be used for. We need to move beyond petty disagreements and see that everyone is seeking the same thing. To use an analogy, disagreements between occult paths are like Scientists arguing over the correct use of electricity to power machinery. Neither is right or wrong, they've discovered a different application for the same power.

As we develop and our perspectives develop these old laws will be rediscovered in a new light. Lest we forget, one of the highest truths of Hermetics is "The path is closed unless we're fitted to receive". Develop and integrate the warring parts of yourself and the halls of the initiate will be revealed within you.

I do want to say one thing about all the knowledge that is being offered to us, here and elsewhere. I personally feel it is important to remember that learning it isn't likely to be the first time we have done so. In fact, learning is more likely to be recalling, which is one of the reasons why knowledge resonates so strongly for us. It is a return to what we already know. I salute you all!

Law of self-knowledge - I think this one is the most difficult to achieve for just about everyone. Funny though, we are closest to ourselves, yet truly knowing ourselves seems so far away. I mean, people have a hard time sitting still for 5 minutes to meditate.
