The Universal Symbol of the Serpent

I know that snakes have been used to 'test your faith in Jesus' in the USA (and probably UK/Europe).
One would have to stick their hand in a bucket covered with a towel, not knowing if there was a snake inside and if it would bite you...

To me, the snake who eats it's own tail is the most vivid memory of snakes in mythology and religion. You cannot see where it ends or begins, so it represents the unending circle of life.

According to Norse mythology, one of Loki's "creature" off-spring was Midgårdsormen, who was thrown into the sea where he grew so rapidly, he eventually encircled the earth and bit himself in the tail. He was, I guess, what would be considered now as a sea serpent. The symbol shows up a lot on jewelry, usually as the outer edge of the pentacle, and on the inside is typicaly a rune.

I tend to agree with you in a manner, that the snake symbol, the oroborus, stands for not only eternity, wisdom, and completeness, but the entire whole of reality and its endless cycle of creation and destruction.

How does a snake move? Do you feel any relevance? Have any of you experienced anything describable as a serpentine energy?

The inherent meaning strikes one, if one only let the symbol sit in his unconscious. Blavatsky elaborates on the serpent. Sense I have taken this into account, I have found many reasons why an adept would identify with the Serpent. For one: A person with the inclinations of an adept is always trying to wrap his mind around things many times greater than himself, like a serpent unhinging its jaw so that he may encompass the entire world. Why does one pick up theosophical literature but to understand every important religion and culture, or how all things are occultly, or ecclesiastically governed?

The serpent is a symbol found in many spiritual systems and through gnosis it is esoterically understood as being a universal symbol of spiritual consciousness. In Kundalini it represents the ascending consciousness through the energy system of consciousness where duality, negative and positive, male and female are joined to bring about illumination. It represents raising from the base, the lower aspects of humanities consciousness to the level of enlightened awareness of divinity.

The symbolism of the snake is seen in the story of genesis as the key to knowledge and the door of duality. The tree of knowledge, and the tree of life represent aspects of the sacred journey of consciousness within the self and are interdependent in the ascent towards the illumination. This symbolism of kundalini appears in this story of self realization and balance.

The Egyptians have been seen to have the symbol of the snake, projecting from the third eye.

I am currently reading a book on Gnosis which discusses these concepts in depth, to a much higher degree than I have represented here. I would like to absorb the depth of this universal concept of the serpent energy as a divine symbol of inner consciousness ascending towards illumination.

Ive actually been writing a book, which contains this subject as well. Ive also seen connections with the oroboros and the moon. all of which related to energy as well. I dont want to reveal too much since my book is not complete yet.. but i linked these concepts to Nikola Tesla and Einstein as well in many ways.
