Well, it's interesting, I just found out All My Children, which has been on for decades is being cancelled by ABC as is One Life to Live. I had a stint of watching AMC when I was young.
Television is changing, it's mostly reality tv and game shows these days isn't it. I don't have cable anymore, and gladly not. Whenever I go to someone's house that has cable I flick through the channels and there's nothing on but commercials synchronized with each other.
I think what's missing from today's television is good writing, at least from what I've seen in recent times. Reality tv doesn't leave much room for interesting writing other than seeing who can gossip and fight the most. Well soaps were obviously a lot about life's little drama's which included lots of fighting, but I think the setting, camera work, etc., had a much more sophisticated feel. I think soaps also had a more fantasy, romantic type of feel to them, like more grounded and earthy feeling. Now so much on tv is cheap and trashy looking, it feels plastic and only conjures the most base emotions of laughing at another's expense, anger, disdain and just all around bitchiness.
Television has many positive uses in terms of education, but so often it a huge waste of time with the addictive shows about nothing useful. I know some people who can't get enough of reality shows. The Learning Channel used to be educational, now its exploitive reality shows have taken over. I think A&E also used to have classics as a niche channel, now it's just another channel like all the others.
Funny a friend recently told me Dynasty, Dallas and Falcon's Crest are must see's.
Anyhow, I like the song... I remember hearing it on in the background growing up. Brings back early memories of being in a world that felt more connected. Life just seemed more earthy back then.
