The historical Babylon - Iraq. Nebuchadnezzar
"Babylon the Great has Fallen."
It's not uncommon to see this line referring to the US government/economy. Being the dominating force the US is, it's not surprising to see people making the parallels.
But what is Babylon? Was the Tower of Babel really symbolic of elites wanting to reach God by building a high tower, or could it be more representative of leaders in power building a structure like a government or financial system that would rule over the world with all power and authority like a God? Were the "world trade" twin towers not seen as this type of authoritative monetary symbol in the world sitting atop a city of great financial proportions of the richest country in the world?
To Babble is said to refer to the root "Babylon" or possibly the other way around. When the tower of mythic proportions fell, it was said that people's languages were all scattered, causing all communications to be unable to be understood, all sounding as babble to one another.
But what about the world we live in now? With our media, our social networking, the internet, is there not so much babbling really going on? So much of what is said and read is just rhetoric, propaganda, bias, nonsense, purposely misleading information for political purposes, etc. Are all these things not just a constant mega-dose of babble?

The Tower of Babylon is a mystical symbol. It is a tower built of a type of brick which is fired in a furnace. It is often described as being built in an ascending spiral.
In mystical terms, the Tower of Babylon represents the path of Passion/Kundalini. The idea is that as Passion builds upwards, it burns or destroys the ego and all the issues involved. Once Passion reaches the 6th chakra the third eye is opened, allowing the aspirant to "see" both mystically and extrasensory. When the aspirant is righteous and just, then the power is used for the good of all.
However when the aspirant is corrupt or tries to advance the energies too quickly, then God strikes the tower that has been built with a lightning bolt, thus destroying that which had been built. Or if a personified deity makes you squeamish, it can also be described as an operation in physics. The Power of Grace or flash of light destroys the built up Passion in order to balance the system. This story is the biblical equivalent of Plato's Atlantis. Plato's Atlantis uses the symbol of water to denote The Power of Grace, while the biblical version uses a flash of light or lightning to denote The Power of Grace.

Babalon can be seen as a symbol of an oppressive world or regime, however babylon/sumeria was the cradle of civilization suppesdly in iraq. Jews were arguably polytheistic then became monotheisitc, geopolitical enemies were demonized eg kings of tyre or pagans as satan/adversaries. Previous cultures that were conquered were assimilated into or demonize d in the dominant culture.

Mythical tales can reflect the historical events of any time. Just as Revelations can be related to both current events and the historical events of empirical Rome, the Tower of Babel can be similarly related to current history and ancient times. When we recognize a pattern that is destructive, it is important to make corrections and policy changes in the outer world.
However, it is when you delve deeper into the mystery that the inner workings of the divine energies within the soul are revealed. In my opinion, this is the meaning most people miss. When you know the inner structure and how it operates, then you can balance your "Self" from the inside. You don't have to wait for the world to change to have peace in your life.
Once we understand this mystery, the world becomes nothing more than a reflection of our personal inner state. When our inner state is balanced and peaceful the "world ends." Everything that is happening is seen as good or necessary learning experiences. This radical concept is the meaning of honest, righteous, right thinking mystical groups who claim to be "taking over the world."
So, the question is, "Are you looking at the inner or the outer?"
Both are valid.
The road runs both ways.
