White Stag

The newspapers are currently making a noise regarding the appearance of a (rare) white stag in the highlands of Scotland, relating that the white stag has deep spiritual meaning to the Celts.

Does anyone know the symbolism / associations? It is not one I have come across.

Thanks for mentioning this. I checked online and found this video on the Reuters website that shows the white stag among other stags just hopping around. This is truly amazing to see this!

I also found this excerpt from a site that says:

"The ancient Celts revered such exqisite animals and believed them to be messengers from the afterlife or from the "other world". It is still believed that their appearance is an omen of impending profound changes in the lives of the people who encounter them."

I find this very interesting. Those who encounter the stag in old days would only be those in the surrounding area where the stag is spotted. But today, with the help of the internet and videos, it can get very interesting since a very high proportion of people with internet will be able to see this stag. I think even though the video is not live encounter, it is good to note that the impending change could be what most have been waiting for in the past few years. Could it be the start of global consciousness opening to the One connection???

Mmm, yes, interesting. That White Stag would make a good subject for contemplation with its great, lordly antlers and its color inverted to this world. Surely, it is like something otherworldly. Surely the poets do well to describe a thing as what it is like.

Confession time.... I forgot all about Mr White Stag...

Earlier this year, a group of us were lucky enough to be 'in the right place at the right time' - only we didn't realise it... Walking past a field of deer, we took a couple of snapshots. Next day we happened to be in the vicinity of one of the potential locations where the white stag may have been spotted. We actually joked how wonderful it would be if we had the chance to spot him: whilst fully not expecting to...

A few days later... whilst downloading the happy snaps...





We couldn't believe it. There he was - looking straight at us! We even remember musing on how infrequent albinism would be likely in the deer population.

Nice to see that he has been popular with the ladies (There are actually a couple of year old males obvious in the second picture. So he was sucessfully breeding when the news broke initially).

I meant to post these after sufficient time had passed that he would have moved on. He'll be in his winter grounds now, so probably safe enough to post. (Though why I should feel that any would be hunters would be frequenting the forum is anyone's guess... )

Sadly, a white stag in the Forest of Dean was killed and beheaded. The only words I can think of for this atrocity would probably get me banned from the forum.

I have never seen an albino deer before. I have seen an albino crow, and even an albino squirrel. Those are some nice pictures though. Thanks for the share.

The home I grew up in, I drove passed a deer farm every time I came too and from town. I thought I remember domestic deer are white? I could be wrong, but I believe a lot of domesticated breeds of animals are white. I don't know if this is related to albino-ism in some way, but I just thought I would throw that out there.


Something else that just came to mind relating to albino-ism... I remember watching a program on the discovery channel about a monastery that worshiped a goddess (forget the name) that was represented by a rat. The place was home to 10s of thousands of rats, and people came and shared food and water with the rats that inhabited the area. There was an albino rat there, that was believed to be THE goddess's earthly form. It was good luck if you where able to see her within the thousands of other rats running around. Interesting note, the place has been around even before the black death hit Europe/Asia and not 1 case of the plague has ever been reported in that area... Even though people that visit will share food/drink with the rats.
