I saw in the news Jonathan Frid has died at the age of 87. He played Barnabas Collins on the soap opera Dark Shadows, in the 1960's.
I had no idea about this soap opera. If I had, I definitely would have watched it a long time ago, as I've always wanted to watch a show like that. I did a little research and found out it's about Vampires, werewolves, zombies, etc. Excellent... I took a look on Amazon and they are available on DVD, the full collection of the series of the show which ran on ABC from 1966-1971 with over 1100 episodes at 30 minutes each, is available for over $400. You can also buy the series in smaller collections of episodes ranging from about $20-$50, and there are 25 of them I saw, so that's quite a bit.
I looked on youtube and found a couple of the first episodes. I also found out that Tim Burton is doing a film based on it, also called Dark Shadows, due to come out on May 11, 2012 and stars Johnny Depp. I had no idea of any of this, but found out since yesterday. This morning I watch the first couple of episodes. I'd like to find more.
I read that it's a cult classic and there are die hard fans, who aren't too keen on the Tim Burton adaptation. Apparently it's much different than the series and has a lot of comedy. I'm not sure I want to see it before I get a chance to see the soap opera series as it may skew the soap and condense important key points of the soap into a couple of hours... in other words a spoiler.
I'm fascinated by this... a soap opera about werewolves, zombies, ghosts, vampires, etc.... now that seems like a lot of fun, and it's got that 1960's vibe too. Sounds groovy to me!
Here's the first two episodes Season 1 Episodes 1 and 2.
Here's an article about Jonathan Frid who just recently passed away.

Watch the UK version. Sooo much better than the U.S. version. The acting feels more genuine and a lot stronger connection to the characters.
UK version? When was that made, in the 60's also? I need to find this online, it's not on netflix unfortunately, and buying it is way too expensive, but it is over 1000 episodes.
