Alexander McQueen brings out the imagery of ancient history and myth in a show of symbolic animal and alien-like fashion. Plato’s Atlantis reveals a blend of historical and futuristic imagery that depicts the imagination of the Atlantean mythology. Snakes, water, animal prints and moving camera’s that resemble animal-like machines brings the viewer into a world of Atlantean ambiance of the technologically advanced.
The live webcast had glitches, reportedly from Lady Gaga twittering to her fans the debut of her latest single during the show. The flood of viewers bringing down the show, nearly symbolic of the myth of Atlantis ravaged by floods destroying the show. Luckily the show itself continued, giving the on-site audience what the worldwide viewers missed live.
The model canvases all looked alien, with snake features and watery appearances. The sophistication of the show seemed to bring the viewer full circle through the imagination of ancient and future evolutions of the human journey, past and future, uniting the times.
Atlantean’s are often deemed as using crystals as part of their civilization, so it was surprising to not see a few crystals thrown in to the collection. However, Alexander’s uniquely inspiring visionary talent has enough mastery to be able to leave off the obvious details to make it his own and drawing on Plato’s original version, rather than the later sci-fi versions, the collection seems aptly named.
In the beginning of the show we see the purity of nature coming through the snake, water, fish, mammal clothing, then moving into dark, sheer pieces. Perhaps this movement displays the transition from natural purity to dark, emptiness, which Plato described the Atlantean race as developing. From pure, god-like hearts united with nature to the darker aspects of the human condition, returning to the abyss of the water, then ultimately to gold and light.
