Time Machine. World's Most Powerful Telescope Now Operational

In search of our cosmic origins, the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) telescope, officially turned on March 12. After 10 years of construction, ALMA has finally launched and is ready to view images of space 10 times sharper than the Hubble telescope.

ALMA collects radio waves rather than optical light and converts them into digital information. The 66 antennae of about 70,000 square feet each, act together to provide a wide angle view. The strength of ALMA will allow us to see deeper into space than ever before and further back in time to when the first galaxies in the universe were born.
